Whatcha Been Watching??

Image
Hey all! (All like 2 of you that actually read my blog posts 😂) When I started this movie review blog I had a vision for how it would look like, but within a very short period I found myself way in over my head. See, I consume a boatload of content every week and with the detail and precision I was trying to put into each entry, I was doomed from the start. There was no way I could keep up with my viewings. There's also the small issue that sometimes I'll watch something and I don't have a strong feeling from the experience. It was either amazeballs; pretty good, decent, okay, pretty shitty or terribad and there's just not much more to say! I've come to the conclusion that not every film or TV show that I watch deserves a long winded post. So, with that in mind, I've decided to do a much, much more condensed version with the hope of covering more of what I'm viewing and possibly drumming up more conversation with all (2) of you!  I was inspired by a movie...

"@Zola" 2021

Wowza! This movie was quite the ride. I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about it, lol. I came across this one only because I follow A24 on Instagram (A24 is the film production company and have been responsible for some of my favorite outlandish, oddball, indie gems) and the story seemed like a chaotic, risqué adventure, so of course I was interested. It's based off of a real extensive twitter thread that went viral and became known as #TheStory. 148 tweets all written by former exotic dancer, Zola, recounting a crazy weekend spent in south FL with a crazy chick she had just met. This chick was not what she seemed and roped Zola into a world of lies, pimps, guns, tricks and deals. I say "roped" lightly because altogether it seemed like she was a willing participant... I have seen Riley Keough in several roles before but this one took the cake in her versatility. She was fun, enticing, believable and holy crap OBNOXIOUS at times. She represented the kind of per...

"The Green Knight" 2021

So the hubby and I went and saw this one over the weekend on a very spontaneous whim. It was a smokey, hot Sunday afternoon and an air conditioned movie theater with some adult beverages just sounded like the right way to go. We watched several trailers for different movies and landed on "The Green Knight" because A) it looked like it was going to be visually awesome and B) the storyline sounded like an epic fantastical journey not unsimilar to "Lord of the Rings" (which we both love). Not to mention having Dev Patel as the lead actor was also a huge draw for me. He is such a good, expressive actor and I was excited to see him in this Arthurian role. Now maybe we should have done some prior research on this medieval tale in order to know what we were walking into, but I firmly believe that kind of homework shouldn't be necessary for an audience member to enjoy the product being put out. It should be able to stand on it's own by means of good writing, wel...

"Super Dark Times" 2017

Found this gem on my horror subscription channel- Shudder. Shudder is a wonderful platform for lovers of cheeseball B and C rated horrors; movies with twisted, demented and unapologetic storylines, OG classics and occasionally the deeply disturbing indie film. This one falls into the latter category.  To call it a 'coming of age' story seems a bit wrong given the premise revolves around a murder involving teenagers, but that's truly what it is. Real, everyday adolescent boys who get wrapped up in a situation way above their heads. One poor split second decision that ultimately changes their lives forever. The cast was filled with a ton of first-time, no name young actors and man did they do a good job! The relationships felt superbly real and the dialogue was just as cringe worthy as you would imagine a group of teenage boys hitting puberty might be. Many of the scenes felt tangible, almost like they were plucked from a memory of your own high school days (well, all exce...

"Old" 2021

Oh M. Night Shyamalan, what lucrative powers you have over me! No matter how feeble the marketing for your films may be, somehow, I am consistently convinced to pay money to watch your work on the big screen. *Insert meme: SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!*   I am admittedly wrapped around your finger due to the bits of greatness you seem to drop in every other (okay that's being generous) film... Despite repeated bouts of disappointment, I go into every viewing with the anticipation my skin will crawl with concepts of the afterlife and the unjustified souls of "The Sixth Sense". Or fear of ever being alone with a baby monitor again... "Signs". Or possibly I'll have further ammunition to distrust the general population... "Unbreakable" or be wary of mental illness..."Split".  "Old" was no different in terms of my expectation. The premise was incredibly intriguing! A mysterious, gorgeous beach where an individual inexplicably begins to ...
